Air compressor is an automotive equipment which is used to convert electrical energy into kinetic energy. This conversion is done by enabling the pressurization and compression of air. This air is finally released in quick bursts. The various methods of air compression can be categorized broadly into two categories, namely, positive displacement and non positive displacement.

The air compressors which are of the positive displacement type function by producing fixed volumes of air only at a high pressure. These compressors use pistons which are regulated by a crankshaft and this crankshaft forcefully compresses the air in the chamber for use. Positive displacement is seen in piston type air compressors which make constant use of the motion of pistons to pump air forcefully in a chamber. The same type of displacement is also seen in rotary screw compressors where two helical screws are matched and turned, eventually paving way for the air to enter a chamber whose volume is reduced as and when the screws turn. The air compressors which are of the non positive displacement type include centrifugal compressors. The centrifugal compressors make use of the centrifugal force which is generated by an impeller which is spun to accelerate and decelerate the air captured. This process pressurizes the air.

Now, there are a few basic ways that an air compressor can be maintained on your own. And many of them do not even require you to do any manual labour to repair the damage. A few of the tips to maintain your air compressors would be by-1. Reading the instruction manual of the air compressor provided - It is imperative that one reads the manual as nothing would be more disastrous for the air compressor more than an uninformed owner. Also, reading the manual means that you are aware of the warranty period of your air compressor.
2. Clean the intake vents of the compressor - You'll lose power on your compression if you force the air compressor to work too hard meaning the quality of your tool would be drastically reduced. So make sure that the intake vents are all clear from dust and dirty environment. 3. Draw off the moisture from the tanks - Compressed air is quick to catch moisture prevalent in a humid climate. Most tanks are usually fitted with a valve to drain off this moisture but it is your duty as the owner to drain off this moisture regularly. Drain off only after the pressure is released from the tank though. 4. Clean the fuel tank - To ensure most favourable conditions for operating your machinery, you need to regularly clean your fuel tank. It needs to cleaned at least once every year to preserve the life of your engine.

Reciprocating air compressors are of the positive displacement type, implying that the pressure is increased as they decrease the volume. It further implies a successive intake of air which is initially limited to a confined space and also elevation of this air to a higher pressure by the compressor which is accomplished by them through a piston. Rotary air compressors consist of two rotors which compress the air and these rotors are found in a casing where the compression takes place. The most commonly used compressor of this type is either the spiral lobe or the single stage helical compressor. They are easy to operate and have a low maintenance. The centrifugal air compressors, by converting angular momentum which is imparted by the rotating impeller, deliver a high pressure
