Here are a few simple tips that will help you keep your kitchen functional as well as beautiful.

Be creative. Decorating is about releasing your artistic side. If you've been plagued by mundane tasks and repetitive work day in and day out, this is a timely opportunity for you to get in touch with your ingenious self - Have a makeshift bookshelf for your cookbooks; install a glass pane cabinet for showcasing your glass wares; decorate the kitchen with a timely theme say, in time for the Holiday season, Valentine's Day, Halloween, Fourth of July, Back to school, Mother's Day and Father's Day. The list is endless. It can even be a family tradition or accessorizing for a birthday and anniversary. We see living rooms and gardens adorned with nice decors on special days, but kitchen is almost always filled with pots, pans and the tornado-like after-effects of preparation. Why not include the kitchen in decorating for a change?

Seasonal decorations are also great for revamping your kitchen's look without having to squeeze your brain out for inspiration. By implementing the season's colors and trademarks, you can decorate the kitchen without much hassle. This time of the year is spring and bright colors are trendy. Soon, it will be summer and the colors will take a lighter shade. The colors can be applied to window blinds or valance, hand towels, mitts, rag rugs, etc.

When it comes to your counter top, there are two types of people. Some people like to keep their counter top completely clear and then other people like to see everything that they own gadget wise out and ready for action. You should sit in the middle of these two types of people. If you use something almost everyday, such as a coffee pot or your food processor every night with supper, then keep it out. On the other hand if your new state of the art blender is only being used once a week or only for the holidays find a home for it within your cabinet space hidden below the scenes. Remember though that items that you have on top of your counter can also be clustered into categories that are relative to their function. If in the morning you make toast and coffee, and then have them plugged into the same outlets as they will make lovely companions to each other. If you're a mother that cooks every night, your food processor and electric can opener would make another great cluster with the same outlet.

Plants are a very positive addition to your kitchen. If you have a window in your kitchen and the available counter space, add a bit of life with a plant. If you can't remember to water them, set an alarm on your cell phone once a week that says to water plants. Everybody has a cell phone now a day and uses the alarm or calendar features on them quite frequently. A plant doesn't only look beautiful, but it cleans the air of the pollution and gives you oxygen in the atmosphere.

Area rugs. No decorating will ever be complete without area rugs. These are effective decorative items and protective aids for the floor. Rugs will give comfort to tired feet, protection against grease, stain and dirt, and beauty to the space. Use rugs that suit the current theme and motif of the kitchen, and those that are easy to wash.
