Undertakers' or funeral directors' job is to make preparations for funeral services and other associated needs and requirements. Some of the essential qualities and traits that are needed by those in this profession are mentioned below.

Since an undertaker's services may be needed at any time of the day, the person entering this profession must be willing to be on call for 24 hours. This is primarily an outdoors job, which will need him to be outside the office for most of the time.

An undertaker must be an excellent communicator and a patient listener. With clients hailing from many religions, traditions and cultures, he must be able to communicate with and manage each one of them successfully. Understanding and sympathy will be of great importance in the course of his job. As an undertaker, he is also expected to comfort the family members in their moment of grief, and he must not allow pain or sorrow to cloud his abilities.

As an undertaker, an individual must project a dignified and serene personality, while seeing that his behaviour doesn't heighten the sorrow of the bereaved family members and relatives.

Knowledge of various religious customs, rituals and beliefs and profound respect for these helps undertakers find success in their profession. As different people follow different funeral customs and methods, it is advantageous to have knowledge of these.

An undertaker should have good managerial and organizational skills. He must also have leadership abilities and should be able to interact with a large number of people - from the clergy members to the local florist.

As the undertaker will be in charge of obtaining all clearances and following all regulations with respect to the ceremony, he will need to be well versed in such procedures and legal matters. He should also be aware of the official procedures to be adhered to for obtaining death certificates, insurance claims etc.

Lastly, an undertaker must ensure that his driver's licence is updated and that he can drive the funeral vehicle during the ceremony.
