Undertakers or funeral directors are perhaps the most important people, other than the close relatives and clergymen to be associated with the funeral service. These professionals take care of the preparations of the funeral, straight from the start till the end. The task of undertakers is of such nature that they have to be ready anytime of the day and on any day in the year.

In the face of such a huge loss, the bereaved family may not be able to take fast decisions regarding the service and final disposition of the body. This is precisely where the undertaker enters the scene and takes over. His duties include deciding the specific time, venue, and way in which the funeral service will be conducted. In addition to that, the undertaker in fact helps you come to terms with your loss, by merely being there for you and acting as an organiser of the funeral services, which display the love and respect you hold for the departed.

The first and foremost step in organising any funeral service is to decide the time, venue and date of the funeral service, so that the same can be communicated to friends and relatives. Once this is decided, the undertaker assists you in bringing the deceased to the funeral site or to the place where he or she is to be finally rested. In the event of a burial service, the appropriate coffin in which the body is to be laid is mostly selected by the undertaker.

The undertaker handles every aspect of the funeral service, including decoration with flowers, hearse, luncheon, priests, choir singers, ashes and headstone, and any other detail that should be worked upon. The wish of the family is always taken into account in all these preparations so that the deceased gets a funeral service in a manner he or she would have wanted to.

Lastly, some undertakers take care of the shipment and proper preservation of the body, and can organize the funeral service in a foreign country if wished for by the family of the deceased.
