Before you apply to become a magistrate there are a few important things to consider. You do not need formal qualifications to become a magistrate but you do need to be able to prove you possess the following qualities; that you are of good character, have a good understanding and good communication skills, show social awareness, are able to demonstrate maturity and sound judgement. It is also important that you can show commitment to the position.

Magistrates need to maintain public confidence in the legal system and therefore certain people will be unable to become magistrates. If your career proves to be a conflict of interest then you may be disqualified, an example of this is police men and women.

Those looking to undertake a magistrate position should be respectable members of their community and perceived by others as being of good character. It is unlikely that people who do not have good character would be accepted. Magistrates are there to provide an example of a good citizen. Some people will find that if they have a history of driving offences then they will find themselves banned from being accepted.

People who are disabled can work as magistrates and applications are welcome, however if your health will prevent you from fulfilling your duties then you may be deemed as not eligible.

There are many magistrates courts situated throughout Wales and England, if you are interested in applying to become a magistrate then visiting them may be a good idea.

There are several important issues to consider before applying, it is important to realistically consider if you will have enough time. The initial training can last for twenty hours, although training usually takes place outside normal working hours. It is wise to consider how accommodating your employer will be, although it is legally binding that they allow time off for magistrate duties.

You will also need to consider which court you wish to work at, you can choose a court close to where you live or your workplace if desired.
